Star Wars – The Force Awakens Movie Review
I was very excited that J.J. Abrams was chosen to direct the new Star Wars movie – Star Wars – The Force Awakens. I am a Trekkie also and though it took me a little while to embrace the new Spock, I really liked both of the J.J. Abrams directed new Star Trek movies.
As for Star Wars, I still remember being in grammar school when the pre-movie marketing began for the original movie Star Wars (A New Hope) – Soooooo exciting! Such an amazing thing for a little boy to experience. I remember waiting in a very long line to see the movie. Wow!!
When they decided to create the next set 20+ years later, I was very excited that they were going back to the amazing world that George Lucas created. So much fun to see Obi Wan Kenobi in his prime. There were parts that I like more than others but all and all I thought they were great! They did a really good job at telling their own stories and while staying true to the original movies and bridged the old and new very well.
Ok.. Star Wars – The Force Awakens. I really wanted to love it and I expect that I will love the next one…I thought that I might watch it a second time before writing this review but I decided to write now and then watch again and see if I wanted to write an addendum.
–Spoiler Alert —
I liked the new girl Jedi and I liked the foreshadowing that they did with her when she was drawn to Luke’s light saber and I am excited for what will happen in the next movie with Luke as the new Obi Wan and Rey as the new Jedi apprentice. I liked that they made the storm troopers more human, I love that more Star Wars movies are coming!
There is a whole giant Star Wars Expanded Universe that fiction writing novelists have been producing for a very long time and I have had the pleasure of reading some good Star Wars books. When I started reading the Star Wars Expanded Universe books, I read that the authors are encouraged to read the other EU books and writers consult with each other. There is a time-line that is respected. For example, there is The Han Solo Trilogy by A.C. Crispin that chronicles the young adventures of Han Solo finishing up in the cantina where we first meet Han in A New Hope. Now that it is out there, another writer will not write a different version of Han’s young life unless that author focuses on a particular set of adventures and stays true to A.C. Crispin’s storyline.
What I have appreciated from the novels and was looking forward to in Star Wars – The Force Awakens was a fresh great story within the Star Wars Universe and The Force. I felt let down. I understood that there was a desire to have a story that bridged the old with the new, to honor the past and pass on the energy to the next generation to pick up the light saber. Accomplished…. I just felt that they could have done it in a more creative way. Do all the right things by the original characters and story line and also tell a great new story that dynamically launched us in to the next generation of great Star Wars movies. I am still super excited about what is to come but I think they could have done a better job and not made a whole STAR WARS MOVIE as just a bridge, transition movie.
That’s it for now!
